Gifting Item Guide — Grand Masquerade 2026
Session: 8 Date: 2026-04-20 Owner: Amber (procurement and final decision) Target: 50–75 units, Grand Masquerade theme, LNT-compliant
The constraints (non-negotiable)
Before anything else: gifting items at a Burning Man regional must not create MOOP (Matter Out of Place). This disqualifies many obvious "festival gift" ideas.
Disqualified immediately: - Standard glitter (microplastic MOOP; strictly prohibited by LNT) - Loose confetti - Anything that sheds small parts (cheap plastic beads, sequins that fall off) - Items with styrofoam packaging - Perishable food without clear allergen labeling and date marking - Anything that creates trash the recipient can't easily pocket or pack out
Required characteristics: - Self-contained: nothing falls off, sheds, or scatters - Pocketable or wearable (recipient can carry it without a bag) - Durable enough to last the event if the recipient wants to keep it - No allergens unless clearly labeled (for food items) - Easy to hand off casually
What makes a Grand Masquerade item feel right
The theme is mystery, elegance, transformation, masked identity, theatrical costume. Items that evoke: - Masks and faces - Velvet, feathers, gold/silver, jewel tones - Playing cards, mystery, intrigue - "You are invited" / event / occasion formality - Theatrical accessories
The theme connection is optional — it's a nice-to-have that will read well if done, but the gifting culture does not require thematic alignment.
Recommended options (with sourcing and cost estimates)
Option A — Mini Mask Pendant or Charm Bracelet
What it is: A small decorative mask pendant (Mardi Gras style, ~1–2 inches) on a cord or chain, or a bracelet with a single mask charm.
Why it works: - Wearable immediately - Inherently masquerade-thematic - Durable; won't create MOOP - Gender-neutral - Recognizable at a glance as a gift
Sourcing: - Amazon: search "mini masquerade mask charms bulk" or "Mardi Gras mask pendants wholesale" — bulk packs of 50–100 available - Party City / Oriental Trading Company: check "Mardi Gras" accessories section - Estimated cost: $15–30 for 75 pieces (under $0.50/unit)
LNT check: Pass. Solid item; nothing sheds.
Option B — Hand Fan (Small, Folding) with Camp Name Label
What it is: A small (6–8 inch) folding paper or fabric hand fan, either pre-decorated or with a sticker label added by Amber.
Why it works: - Genuinely useful at a hot outdoor July event — this is a functional gift - Masquerade-appropriate (hand fans are part of that aesthetic) - Easy to carry; goes in a back pocket - Personalizing with a camp name label makes it memorable
Sourcing: - Amazon: "mini folding hand fans bulk 50" — available in jewel tones, gold, mixed colors - Estimated cost: $15–25 for 50 fans - Labels: Avery label sheets + printer or handwritten
LNT check: Pass. Fan is intact; no small parts.
Notes: - Jewel-tone fans (purple, gold, royal blue, deep red) read masquerade without any additional decoration - If Amber adds a small handwritten note or label, this becomes a much more personal gift
Option C — Decorated Playing Cards (Single Cards)
What it is: Single playing cards from a deck, optionally decorated or stamped on the back, given as a token. "The Queen of Spades extends her regards."
Why it works: - Masquerade / mystery framing is inherent - Weighs almost nothing; easy to carry in a pocket - Endlessly customizable (stamp, draw, write on the back) - A full deck (52 cards) doesn't cover 75 units — need 2 decks minimum; Amber can split them or use multiple decks
How to execute: - Buy 2–3 inexpensive card decks - Leave them plain, or rubber-stamp the back with a simple design, or write a short phrase on each - Optional: apply a small washi tape accent to the back
Sourcing: - Any dollar store: $1–2 per deck × 3 decks = $3–6 - Rubber stamp (optional): craft store or Amazon, ~$5–10 - Total cost: under $20 for 75+ cards
LNT check: Pass. Individual cards are pocket-able and durable.
Notes: - This is the most labor-intensive option but also the cheapest and most personal - The "mystery" framing (who is the Queen? who is the Joker?) lands very well at a masquerade event
Option D — Masquerade-Themed Button Pin (1.5" or 2" Pin-Back)
What it is: A custom printed button pin with a masquerade image and/or the camp name.
Why it works: - Can be custom-made with a specific design - Wearable immediately; people pin them on immediately - Durable; holds up in heat - 50–100 units is standard run for custom buttons
Sourcing: - Busy Beaver Button Co. (busybeaver.net): $20–40 for 75 custom 1.5" pins - Etsy shops: custom button orders - Pinback button machines (if Amber wants to make them): ~$30–50 for the machine; very cheap per unit after
LNT check: Pass. Solid item; pin clasp is secure.
Notes: - This requires a 2–3 week lead time for custom orders — order in June at the latest - The design matters: a simple mask silhouette + camp name or tagline works well - If Amber enjoys making things, a home button maker is a fun project and produces a distinctive result
Option E — Small Wearable "Eye Mask" (Mini, Decorative)
What it is: A tiny (2–3 inch) decorative eye mask — like a keychain or lapel ornament. Not a full wearable mask; purely decorative/gifting scale.
Why it works: - Most on-theme item possible for Grand Masquerade - Self-explanatory as a gift - Lightweight and pocketable
Sourcing: - Amazon / Oriental Trading / Etsy: "mini masquerade masks bulk" — 50–100 packs available - Estimated cost: $15–30 for 75 pieces
LNT check: Verify that the specific item you order doesn't have loose feathers or glitter. Some bulk masks have these. Choose solid, clean designs.
Notes: - The risk here is quality. Cheap bulk mini-masks can be flimsy or tacky. Order a sample before committing to a batch.
Recommended choice
Option B (hand fan) or Option A (mask charm), depending on Amber's preference.
| Hand Fan | Mask Charm | |
|---|---|---|
| Usefulness at event | High (actually cools you) | Low (purely decorative) |
| Masquerade alignment | High | High |
| Personalization potential | Medium-High (label) | Low |
| Cost for 75 units | ~$20–30 | ~$15–25 |
| LNT risk | Low | Low |
| Effort to prepare | Low | Very low |
If Amber wants to put her personal touch on it: Hand fan with a handwritten note or sticker label is the strongest option. It's both useful and personal.
If Amber wants something quick and zero-effort to prepare: Mask charm bracelet ordered in bulk. Zero assembly required.
Quantity and logistics
Target: 60–75 units. 50 is the floor; 75 is comfortable for a 5-day event with a 3-person group.
Packaging: Keep items in a single box or bag at camp. Don't pre-wrap individually — gifting happens in the moment, not from a wrapped package.
How to give: Carry 5–10 items on your person. Offer when a moment arises naturally. Don't distribute at camp entry. Don't hand them to everyone you pass. Give to people you've actually talked to or connected with.
Running out: That's fine. Gifting items are often gone by Day 3. The intention is the point.
LNT final check before packing
Before the event, Amber verifies: - [ ] Item does not shed small parts - [ ] No loose glitter, feathers, or flocking that can become MOOP - [ ] Item is pocketable by the recipient (no large bags needed) - [ ] Any food items are allergen-labeled and date-marked
Decision memo
- Keep: Hand fan or mask charm as the top two options
- Assign: Amber makes final item decision and places order by mid-June
- Reject: Any item with standard glitter, loose confetti, or shedding components
- Reject: Perishable food items unless Amber is willing to manage allergen labeling and date marking
- Standardize: Order 10% above target quantity to allow for breakage (order 80+ if targeting 75)
- Revisit: Year 2 gifting — with a full year of lead time, Amber can plan a more elaborate or handmade item
